A small category, honestly surveyed
The best smart pens for recording meetings
This is a small category and worth saying so. Livescribe Echo 2 is the classic: it records while you write and links each written word to the audio from that moment, using its own dot-patterned paper. Scriben is the AI-era version: ordinary paper, 18 hours of offline recording, and a structured summary with action items rather than synced notes. If you do not need a pen at all, Plaud Note and Pocket are recorders that do the capture part without the writing.
§Our bias, stated. One of these is ours. Livescribe is genuinely better at the thing it invented — replaying audio from a tapped word on the page — and if that is what you want, buy the Echo 2. We have said so in its row rather than burying it. Every fact below was read off the vendor’s own site, checked on 15 September 2026. Products change — check theirs before you buy, and tell us if anything here has gone out of date.
The ranking
4 tools, in order, and why.
01 / Scriben — ours
AI pen · The room, offline
- Best for — Ordinary paper, 18 hours of offline recording, and a structured summary with action items rather than synced handwriting.
- Needs — Nothing running.
- Features — Up to 18 hours of offline recording and 400 hours of storage on the pen; speaker-aware transcript, summary, action items and approval-gated follow-up.
- Against it — iOS app only today, so an Android-only user is not served yet. It does not join video calls and has no live-transcription view while you talk.
02 / Livescribe Echo 2
Smart pen · The room, while you write
- Best for — The original idea, and still the best at it: dot-patterned paper that links every written word to the audio from that moment.
- Needs — Its dot-pattern paper.
- Features — Links each written word to the audio from that moment; 4GB of memory in the pen.
- Against it — It needs Livescribe’s dot-patterned paper, and its output is synced notes and audio rather than a structured summary and action items.
03 / Plaud Note
AI recorder · The room, offline
- Best for — Not a pen. A recorder that does the capture without the writing, with a longer battery than either pen here.
- Needs — Nothing running.
- Features — Up to 30 hours of recording on a charge, with transcription and summaries in its app.
- Against it — Not a pen. It records but does not write, so it is a second object alongside your notes.
04 / Pocket
AI recorder · The room, offline
- Best for — Not a pen either. A recorder that attaches to a phone, aimed at capturing calls.
- Needs — Nothing running.
- Features — Turns a conversation into a mind map, with transcription and speaker separation.
- Against it — Not a pen. A recorder that attaches to a phone, aimed at capturing calls.

Where this comes from
We make one of these.
Scriben is a real ballpoint pen that records the room to its own storage for up to 18 hours, with no phone and no network, then turns the conversation into a transcript, a summary and the work that follows. The pen is $99. We have tried to rank this page as if we did not make it.
